Search Tips
| Tip: | As WATCH does not use "cross-references", make full use of the "Search Other Name Forms" button, if your search is unsuccessful. | |
| Example: | A search for Lord Dacre is unsuccessful. Clicking the "Search Other Name Forms" button retrieves the record for Hugh Trevor-Roper. | |
| Tip: | If you are unsure of the spelling, use a truncated form of the name. | |
| Example: | A search on surname "Becke" retrieves "Beckett" as well as "Becket". | |
| Tip: | For distinctive surnames it is generally unnecessary to enter more than the first initial of the forename, and often there is no need to enter the forename at all. | |
| Example: | There is only one Achebe and only one MacNeice in WATCH. | |
| Tip: | For distinctive names, very much shortened search terms will save time and still be successful. | |
| Example: | A search on surname "Zep" retrieves "Benjamin Zephaniah". | |
| Tip: | For compound surnames, try both versions or use "Search Other Name Forms." | |
| Example: | Mario Vargas Llosa and Ralph Vaughan Williams both file under V. | |
| Tip: | As a Quick Search, it is surprising how many authors' names can be identified uniquely by the first three letters only of surname and forename. | |
| Example: | A search on surname "Hol" and forename "Mic" retrieves uniquely Michael Holroyd. | |
